Every home has a drawer of T-shirts nobody wears. Here is how to turn them into the happiest thing on your floor.

You’ll need

  • 15–25 old T-shirts in as many colours as possible
  • Fabric scissors
  • A large needle and strong thread (or a glue gun)
  • A clothes peg or bulldog clip

Steps

  1. Make yarn. Cut each shirt into 3 cm strips. Give each strip a firm tug so it curls into a tube.
  2. Braid. Knot three strips together and braid. Add new colours by tucking a new strip in as one runs out.
  3. Coil. Start coiling the braid into a flat spiral, stitching or gluing each round to the last.
  4. Keep it flat. Work on the floor and ease the braid around curves so the rug doesn’t cup.
  5. Fringe it. Knot 10 cm strips all around the outer edge for a full rainbow fringe.
