Two siblings, one room, and a long-running argument about whose side was better. The solution: make both sides equally ridiculous.

Before

Two mismatched beds, grey bedding, a bare white wall and a lot of stuff on the floor.

The big moves

  • Scalloped headboards. Cut from MDF with a jigsaw, padded with wadding and wrapped in turquoise-and-white fabric. Each one cost under £25.
  • Floral overload. Bright floral quilts in pink, orange and green with hot pink throws at the foot of each bed.
  • Two suns. Matching turquoise sunburst prints hung over each bed for symmetry — the one thing in the room that is calm.
  • Shaggy floor. A thick white shag rug keeps the floor soft and makes all that colour feel fresh.

What it cost

£92 for the headboards, prints and throws. Quilts were thrifted.

Steal the look

Symmetry is your friend in a busy room. Mirror the layout on both sides and you can go as wild as you like with pattern.
