This bedroom started life as the most polite room in the flat: magnolia walls, white bedding, one sad succulent. The brief from its owner was simple — “I want to wake up and feel like I’m inside a comic book.” Challenge accepted.
Before
A rental with no painting allowed, a cheap pine bedside table and a duvet the colour of porridge. Plenty of light, zero personality.
The big moves
- Statement art first. We hung an oversized pop-art portrait directly above the bedside table so it reads like a headboard. Big art does what paint can’t in a rental.
- Mirror the mood. The pine table got a mirrored-tile makeover (peel-and-stick, £18) so it bounces colour around the room.
- Check, please. A black-and-white gingham duvet grounds the chaos and makes every other colour pop.
- Lamp with a pattern. A leopard-print shade on a chrome base — because the room needed one more surprise.
What it cost
About £240 including the print, the mirror tiles, bedding and the lamp. No deposit was harmed.
Steal the look
- Pick one piece of art that scares you a little. Build everything around its colours.
- Add one strong graphic neutral (black-and-white check or stripe) to stop it tipping into noise.
- Finish with a reflective surface to spread the colour around.
